Does smoking cause acne?

There is some debate about the link between smoking and acne. Once we know whether the two are connected, we'll be one step closer to producing a targeted acne treatment solution that can eliminate pimples and acne scars in individuals who smoke. Finding the best prescription and topical solutions is essential to fighting acne, and asking a doctor about the effects that smoking has on mild and severe acne is another step in the right direction. So here's the question that's been on many of your minds: Does smoking cause acne? It is certainly common knowledge that smoking has negative effects on your skin and can potentially lead to quickly dividing cells associated with cancer. Unfortunately, not all doctors agree that quitting smoking is a surefire form of acne treatment.

Acne Treatment - does smoking cause acne

We can't count the number of times we've been asked the following questions: "What kind of acne treatment will my dermatologist recommend? Is smoking one of the principal causes of my pimples, clogged pores, and skin redness? Are prescription therapy options and antibiotics the only effective acne treatment options?" While we do know that a acne treatment does not have to include expensive laser and light therapies and that numerous procedures and products can be used to treat acne, doctors are not sure whether smoking is a primary cause of clogged hair follicles and bacteria buildup.

Some research has shown that smoking may in fact be associated with cell dryness, and it can contribute to inflammation, acne, and, ultimately, scarring. For example, a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 2006 suggested that after tracking several thousand men over a 20 year period, it was found that "active smokers showed a significantly lower prevalence of severe acne than non-smokers." Another major medical study found similar results. According to the British Journal of Dermatology 2001 research based on a sample of 896 individuals found that smokers tend to have more acne, and inhaling cigarettes can result in breakouts. These studies suggest that tossing away those cigarettes may be a potential acne treatment solution.

But not all research has produced such clear results. A study featured in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology examined 594 people and determined that, "in girls, smoking was significantly associated with lower prevalence of acne… Surprisingly, no significant associations between acne and smoking variables were detected in boys."

There are also researchers who believe that smoking is not directly tied to clogged pores and pimples, regardless of gender. They claim that some studies suggest that there is no statistical difference between smokers and non-smokers when it comes to acne. Furthermore, some doctors believe that smoking may actually help protect individuals against mouth sores, rosacea, and, to some extent, acne. The potentially positive effects of smoking are likely connected to the nicotine content of cigarettes. Nicotine constricts blood vessels which may make some doctors believe that it can inhibit the production of severe forms of acne.

In short, there is a lot of conflicting evidence, and the research community has not yet managed to reach a consensus about the link between acne treatment and smoking. Although not all doctors are convinced that kicking the habit could curb acne, they certainly agree that smoking harms the skin. Smoking has also been linked to poor wound healing and psoriasis, as well as a number of oral, lung, and skin cancers.

Smoking can even change the way your skin looks. It cause wrinkles and can lead to premature skin aging and dry skin. Cigarettes create free radicals, reduce collaged production and degrade skin proteins, all of which age the skin.
